Covering: Gorebridge, Arniston, North Middleton, Temple.
The local landmark: Arniston House, the Georgian seat of the Dundas family, stands in its estate just outside the town.
On the ground: Stone terraces on sloping streets in the old village, with big new build estates around the Borders Railway station. Kerbside works well here: have everything at the door and the driver loads.
While you wait for the van: Scotland's first gunpowder mill opened at Stobsmill on the Gore Water in 1794 and kept working for around 80 years.
